SUMMARY

I have written a children’s book based on some of the techniques that I used to help Joseph get through some difficult treatments and long hospital stays.  A young boy is diagnosed with cancer. He has an operation, Chemotherapy, Bone Marrow Transplant and Radiation. During treatment, he is introduced to his blood buddies: Senior Stem Cell, Mr. Red Cell, Mr. White Cell, and Madam Platelet. Together they make up blood.  Joey learns how each cell has an important job to do in his body and how Chemotherapy works hard to get rid of Curious Cancer Cells.

Here is how the book “Joey’s Blood Buddies” was born… It didn’t take long for me to realize that explaining cancer to my child was not going to be easy.  Explaining and repeating medical information to family and friends was difficult also, since most of the time I didn’t fully understand the information that I was relaying.

After Joseph lost his life to cancer, I dedicated myself to complete “Joey’s Blood Buddies” in the first person.  Now, I believe that this story was meant to be shared.  It is my dream to share Joseph’s voice with you, since he had so much to say. May a little piece of him carry you through your medical journey. I have used many of his actual words and ideas to complete this book (especially Joey’s definitions for things).
